You don't need to be an accountant to read a P&L. This primer gives non-finance managers the vocabulary and intuition to ask the right questions.
Three documents tell the financial story of any business:
**Income Statement (P&L)** — Shows revenue, costs, and net profit over a period. Focus on gross margin and operating margin trends.
**Balance Sheet** — A snapshot of assets, liabilities, and equity at a point in time. Watch the current ratio (current assets ÷ current liabilities) for liquidity health.
**Cash Flow Statement** — Tracks actual cash in and out. A profitable company can still go bankrupt if it runs out of cash.
Ask your finance team to walk you through these three documents monthly. After three sessions, you'll start spotting the story behind the numbers.
